Denture Cleaning

Simple tips to keep your dentures clean

Cleaning your dentures is a lot like cleaning your teeth each day. It’s important not only for your oral health but your overall health in general. Just like teeth, dentures can get a build-up of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, harming your existing teeth and gums.

Try these easy steps for daily denture cleaning:

  • Remove your dentures from your mouth and run clean water over them to dislodge food particles.
  • Use a denture brush or a soft toothbrush with mild soap or denture cleaner to brush the dentures.
  • Avoid other cleaners–they are too abrasive and may cause damage to your dentures.
  • Clean your gums and any natural teeth with a soft, wet toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste while your dentures are out.
  • If a toothbrush is too rough, try wrapping your finger in a wet, soft washcloth to gently rub your gums.

Common Questions

What does a denturist do?

Denturists are dental health care professionals. They provide denture care directly to the public and provide a wide range of denture services. They examine patients who are missing some or all of their teeth, and they can design, repair, construct, and alter removable dentures.

Is a denturist a doctor?

No–denturists are not doctors. Denturists are independent, self-regulated professionals. They work in conjunction with other oral health care providers, including dentists, dental hygienists, oral surgeons, dental technologists, and laboratory technicians. As an integral part of the oral health profession, denturists work hard to provide the best denture care and service to their patients.

What is the difference between a dentist and a denturist?

Specialized training in the aesthetic design, creation, care and application of dentures differentiates denturists from dentists. Denturists can assess your oral health, perform necessary clinical dental procedures, and personally fabricate your dentures.
